Recognising staff and volunteers who go the extra mile

DEDICATED individuals and teams who have gone the extra mile in delivering justice across the county have been honoured at an awards ceremony.

The Wiltshire Local Justice Awards formally recognised the people behind the scenes who have exceeded normal duties in order to deliver an effective service within Wiltshire and Swindon.

The Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board received nominations from staff and volunteers involving the following agencies and organisations: Wiltshire Probation Area, Wiltshire Police, Swindon Youth Offending Team, Wiltshire Youth Offending Service, Erlestoke Prison, the Witness Care Unit, the Independent Advisory Group, Wiltshire Council and Swindon Community Safety Partnership.

The ceremony took place in the Corn Exchange, Devizes, on February 26.

The guest of honour was Robert Floyd, the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, who presented certificates to a wide range of Swindon and Wiltshire criminal justice staff and volunteers. The ceremony was opened by Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board Chair Karen Harrold, who is also the Chief Crown Prosecutor for Wiltshire. Both Robert and Karen are pictured below left.

There were also trophies for best individual and best team, as well as highly commended team and highly commended individual.

The best individual was Liz Berry, who is based at Salisbury Police Station.

Liz was instrumental in the implementation of the Conditional Cautioning initiative in Wiltshire Police.

She was nominated in the category of Working with Offenders and also Caring for Victims and Witnesses.

The best team trophy went to the group of staff responsible for the Wiltshire Alcohol Referral Programme for Offenders.

The multi-agency group comprises representatives from the voluntary and statutory sectors who have worked successfully to reduce alcohol-related re-offending in Wiltshire since 2005.

The highly commended individual was Tom Weedon, who works in Swindon for Wiltshire Probation Area.

The highly commended team was named as the Educational Team at Erlestoke Prison.

The event was organised by the Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board (WCJB), which is responsible for the effectiveness of the Criminal Justice System in Wiltshire and Swindon. The WCJB promoted the awards locally.

A total of 23 nominations were received for outstanding work that has taken place within Wiltshire and Swindon’s criminal justice system over the previous year.

Staff and volunteers who were put forward for the Local Justice Awards were nominated also for the 2009 Office for Criminal Justice Reform’s National Justice Awards.

As in previous years, certificates were presented to everyone who was nominated for a Local Justice Award.

However, because the WCJB’s main focus was on its Local Justice Awards in 2009, trophies were awarded as well.
