Odstock Pupils Insight to CJS

ODSTOCK PUPILS RECEIVE INSIGHT INTO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

Six pupils from Odstock Primary School were recently given the chance to visit their local Police Station in Salisbury, where they were given a grand tour and an insight of how the Police force fits into the wider picture of the Criminal Justice System.

The visit came as a result of a colouring competition run by the Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board as part of the annual “Inside Justice Week” which was held in October 2005. The competition was designed as a learning tool for young people and showed a typical court scene. The majority of entries received and the eventual winner, who received book tokens as a prize, were pupils from Odstock School and so it was decided to give all of the entrants an opportunity to experience the work of a Police Station.

The competition winner, William Poole, was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness.

The pupils were shown round by PC Caroline Holt, Community Youth Affairs Officer and Phil Martin, Public Confidence Officer for the Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board. (WCJB) Having looked around the forensic department, cells and interview rooms, they were then treated to a demonstration of the use of handcuffs and fingerprinting.

At the end of the visit, the pupils were presented with a Criminal Justice goodie bag, including a large poster explaining how the whole Criminal Justice System works, and what other agencies are involved.

Phil Martin, WCJB Confidence Officer said:
“The pupils from Odstock School seemed to really enjoy themselves. They were extremely attentive and asked many tricky questions! I hope the visit has helped them to understand the work of both the Police and the Criminal Justice System. I would like to congratulate William for winning the competition and it was a shame he could not make it on the day.”

The wider community in Salisbury will have the opportunity to see how the Criminal Justice System agencies work when the Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board holds its annual Open Day in the centre of the City on Saturday 17 June 2006. The event, based at the Guildhall and Combined Courts, will include inter-active demonstrations and displays by the agencies and will run from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
