Swindon Mela 2008

WCJB joins in the fun at the Swindon Mela
The Wiltshire Criminal Justice Board (WCJB) helped to celebrate Asian arts and culture in the community at the annual Swindon Mela.
WCJB representatives as well as criminal justice agency staff from across the county were there to speak to the public about the great work taking place to make Wiltshire and Swindon an even safer place to live.
The sun was shinning on July 26 for the event held at the Town Gardens.
The Mela is an all-day celebration of Asian arts and culture, with stage shows including dance and music.
Activities throughout the day included arts and crafts workshops, Carrom tournaments and sari and turban tying, plus walkabout street theatre and entertainments.
There were also numerous food stalls from a variety of caterers offering Punjabi, Gujerati and Halal food as well as Indian ice creams and sweets.
The WCJB held an information stand at the event and encouraged the public to find out more about the work it does.
Children had a chance to play the WCJB Criminal Justice Board Game, which always proves exceptionally popular at community events.
The huge ‘Monopoly style’ game aims to aid children and young adults in understanding the criminal justice process and the agencies involved.
WCJB representatives will also attend the first Swindon Pride event on August 16, also at the Town Gardens.
The Pride will celebrate the creativity and diversity of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community in Wiltshire and Swindon.
