Doing The Right Thing DVD

An Insight In To The Criminal Justice System

Conceptualised and run by the LCJB Victims and Witnesses Group, the project aims to give 11-14 year old students an understanding of the Criminal Justice Service and how victims and witnesses are supported throughout the entire justice process in the UK. It also aims to educate and improve their confidence and knowledge of the criminal justice system.

The DVD "Doing the Right Thing" follows a victims and witnesses journey through the criminal justice system. The film highlights all of the tough decisions that need to be made but also all the support that is available to them. To go along side the DVD, an Educational Resource Pack has been developed for use in schools.

Special thanks go to Lippy Films and the pupils and staff of St Thomas a Becket High School, Wakefield, for their enthusiastic involvement in the production of the DVD, and to the staff of Holmfirth High School for their generous and professional assistance in developing the learning resource support pack.

Launch Event

The DVD and resource pack was successfully launch at an event on the 12th February 2009 in Bradford to an audience of those working in an educational setting, those working with young victims and young offenders and to criminal justice practitioner working with young people in West Yorkshire.

Almost 80 guests attended the day, which was opened by Hilary Sykes of West Yorkshire Police, and Chair of the WYCJB’s Victims & Witnesses Group. Guests viewed the DVD and took part in workshops to learn how to get the most out of the educational resource pack in the classroom setting, as well as networking and making the most of the chance to meet people from a wide number of agencies across the criminal justice system.
