Inside Justice Week Poster Competition 2008
Competition Winner Learns About Life Behind Bars!
Twelve year old St Leonards schoolgirl Cleo Turner was given a unique behind-the-scenes tour of Lewes Prison after winning an Inside Justice Week poster competition.
Cleo, who visited with her mum Shoes, was also presented with an ipod Shuffle for her winning effort by Sussex Criminal Justice Board Chair Sarah Jane Gallagher.
Cleo was praised by the judges for the high standard of her artwork and the innovative way she'd used a storyboard style to convey the message 'Crime doesn't pay'.
On arrival at the prison Cleo was 'treated' to lunch, as eaten by the prisoners themselves, in the staff mess before receiving a personally guided tour from prison governor Eoin McLennan Murray.
Lewes Prison was built in 1853 and Cleo's tour took in the original prison cells, which still house prisoners to this day, as well as modern-day additions such as the new astroturf football pitch and education block.
Cleo, who attends Filsham Valley School in St Leonards, said:
"This is the first competition I've ever won, so I was really excited. The most interesting bit was seeing the actual cells. I'll definitely remember the day for the rest of my life!"
Ten year old Ryan Hill from Newhaven, who was victorious in the under-11s category, was rewarded with a visit to Lewes HQ to meet Sussex Police dog Freddy and his hander Nick Baldwin-Charles.
Nick and Freddy gave Ryan, who visited with his parents and brother Jamie, an exciting display of police dog work - with Freddy demonstrating his skills by sniffing out cloths which Nick had hidden in various locations.
Ryan also met Ch Supt Peter Coll, Head of the Sussex Police Criminal Justice Department, who presented Ryan with his ipod Shuffle.
Michelle Patmore, Community Liaison and Partnerships Officer for the SCJB, said:
"The theme of the competition was 'Crime doesn't pay' and we were really delighted with the standard of entries we received. Cleo and Ryan produced two great winning posters."
Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter and send in some fantastic posters
