Community Cashback

Community Cashback is a scheme taking place across England and Wales which gives local people a say in how money recovered from criminal assets should be spent within their local communities.
The following 5 local projects were funded by Community Cashback in Surrey:
-
Arson Prevention Project
The aim of the project was to control the number of arson attacks on the Worplesdon Group of Commons and create a safer place for the local community. In partnership with Surrey Fire & Rescue and Police Community Support Officers, local children are educated on the effects of uncontrolled fire and the serious consequences of carrying a record for criminal damage and arson.
-
Barn Youth Project
The Barn Youth Project has been running since 1990 and is a voluntary community organisation. Its aim is to provide, safe, fun and appealing activities for young people. The project aimed to extend its opening hours to meet the needs of the local young people. Workshops were implemented which were requested by the young people.
-
Elmbridge Community Fishing Academy
The location for the project was situated in close proximity to a 'hotspot' ward for crime and anti social behaviour in the Borough. The Academy catered for an intake of 24 young people ranging from 8 - 16 years. The police used their local knowledge to refer young people at risk to take part in the academy where they improved their skills, developed their self esteem, raised their environmental awareness and provided training and education relevant to this major leisure activity.
-
Frimley Green Recreational Ground Regeneration
This project was to primarily breathe life back into the Frimley Green Recreation Ground and bring together the community from all walks of life and age groups. The project addressed issues of anti social behaviour and criminal damage and made the area safe and attractive for community use again. The look of the area was revamped and security of the facilities improved. This provided better facilities for the young people and the area was secured with better lighting.
-
Preserve and Protect Claygate Recreation Ground
The grounds provide a centre for community sports activities. After hours youth drinkers/marginalized teens climbed the existing gate, left broken glass on the playing field and disturbed the neighbourhood. Higher gates [one pair] perimeter fencing and a multi-use play area were planned to limit recreational access after hours and improve policing effectiveness. Outcomes expected are elimination of vandalism, reduction of disturbances after hours, public risk reduction from glass fragments and increased community involvement.
