Want to know about the Criminal Justice System?

Support from the public is vital to our work.  Whether you are a victim of crime or anti-social behaviour, a volunteer or a member of the public, you play an important part in making sure your community is a safer place to live

Police - work to prevent crime in the first place and investigate crimes that have been committed.

CPS - decide which charge is appropriate, review the evidence to decide whether a case should proceed and then prosecute the case in court.

Courts - work to ensure that all cases are heard fairly and that the court process is efficient and effective.

Youth Offending Teams - work with young people and communities to prevent crime and ensure that via the Youth Court or the Final Warning Scheme, young people face the consequences of committing crime.

Probation - provide advice to the courts on sentencing through individual offender assessment. They supervise offenders on community sentences, and following release from custody, they include the provision of accredited programmes and community punishment.

Prison - work in partnership with CJS colleagues to provide custodial punishment and rehabilitation of offenders.

Victim Support/Witness Service - assist  victims and witnesses of crime through the court process.
