What is Domestic Violence?

Home Office Domestic Violence PosterDomestic violence is defined as 'any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or are family members, regardless of gender and sexuality'.
Family Member is mother, father, son, daughter, sister, brother, grandparents, in-laws and step family. 

Domestic violence happens to all kinds of families and relationships. Persons of any class, culture, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age and sex can be victims or perpetrators of domestic violence. 

Domestic violence is intentional behaviour with the aim being to exercise power and control within the relationship.


What does the Victim Support Service Do?
 

Victim Support is a Charitable organisation which offers help to anyone who comes in to contact with the Criminal Justice Agencies. The service is free and confidential, offering emotional support and practical assistance.
The Victim’s Code of Practice states that some categories of victim can only be referred to a support agency with the victim’s explicit consent. This includes victims of domestic violence.
