Communities, Crime and Justice
Criminal Justice agencies in Northumbria joined forces to talk about the work they do in Washington in finding longer term solutions to crime in the area.
A special event was held in Columbia to specifically talk about what kinds of crimes are being committed and reported to police and how different agencies work together to tackle them.
The aim of the event, hosted by Northumbria Local Criminal Justice Board, was to look at how justice agencies work together to not only find suitable punishments to deal with offending behaviour but to also resolve the issues through working with offenders whatever their age, to turn them away from criminal behaviour. There was a focus on victim and witness care and what help is available in ensuring they are supported throughout their contact with the Criminal Justice System.
Workshops looked at community sentences, youth offending, victim and witness care, prison projects dealing with alcohol and drug offenders and what help is available to those seeking community or legal advice. There was an opportunity to ask questions and talk to people who work for criminal justice agencies such as the police, probation service, youth offending services, courts and Legal Service Commission.
Sheila Proudlock, Northumbria, Durham and Cleveland Courts area director and Chair of Northumbria Local Criminal Justice Board, said: “There is a lot of work going on between the agencies to address the real crime issues affecting people’s everyday lives.
This event was a great opportunity to hear about the work, ask questions and gain a better insight into how the Criminal Justice System works.”
