Inside Justice Week 2009

Dean Road Prison Open Day - 15th October 2009   9am- 5pm

The local Criminal Justice Agencies in Scarborough are coming together to give presentations throughout the day in the form of workshops at Scarborough's Victorian Dean Road Prison. The Prison is no longer used and is normally shut to the public.However following on from last year's similar event there, permission has again been granted to open this magnificent Grade II building to the public.

In the morning groups of school children are being invited to visit the cells and take part in the workshops , which will include presentations from

Magistrates

Crown Prosecution Service

North Yorkshire Police

Anti social behaviour team

Youth Justice Service

Prison Service

In the afternoon members of the public are being invitied to come along and meet the agencies and take part.

York Magistrates Court 'See Justice done' week   19th-23rd October

York Magistrates Court are offering guided tours of the courtrooms in the magnificient Grade II listed building on Clifford Street York.

Members of the public are being invited to sit in the courts while actual cases are being dealt with.

Serving Magistrates will accompany the visitors and explain what is going on and answer any questions.There will also be an opportunity to speak to the Magistrates working in court that day.

Time: 9.10am & 1.10pm Monday,Wednesday and Friday 9.10am only Tuesday and Thursday

History of Magistrates Court in the Harrogate District  19th - 23rd October

Harrogate Magistrates Court are holding a photographic display covering the History of the Magistartes Court in the surrounding district over the last 100 years. Members of the public can turn up at the court and view the display through out Inside Justice week.

Scarborough Magistrates Court Open evening- 20th October 5.30-7pm 

Scarborough Magistrates Court are staging a mock court event .

Members of the public are invited to come along and have a tour around the court building. They will be able to watch two mock court proceedings and form their own opinion on what the sentence should be having heard all the evidence and mitigating factors.

There will be opportunity to speak with Magistrates, Court legal advisors and Crown Prosecution lawyers about the cases - as well as representatives form other Criminal Justice agencies.

York Magistrates Court Open evening - 22nd October 6.00 - 9.00pm

York Magistrates Court are hosting a special Open evening for members of the public to come along and visit the historic Grade II listed building.

Visitors will be able to see all round the court, including in the cells.

They will be able to watch staged court cases and make their own minds up on what the sentence should be given having heard all the evidence.There will be opportunity to speak with actual Magistrates and meet people involved in the justice system:

Crown Prosecution Service lawyers,probation officers,court legal advisors,security staff,City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police.

Northallerton Magistrates Court - Youth Court 100 Event- 24th October 2009

The Youth Justice System is 100 years old this year and so to coincide with Inside Justice week, Northarllerton Magistrates Court are staging a Youth Court 100 Public event.

They are going to re-enact the trial of 11 year old Sophia Constable who stole a loaf of bread in 1872.Partcipants will all be in period costume.

Members of the public will then be shown a present day youth court case for a similar matter.

During the day the public will also be able to visit the cells in the court and see Art displays form Young Offenders at Nortallerton Young Offenders Institute.

Selby Magistrates Court Open Day visits- 3-6th November 2009

Selby Magistrates are inviting members of the public to come and visit the courtrooms and watch the courts in session .

The visitors will be accompanied by a serving Magistrate who will be able to explain what is going on and answer any questions.There will also be an opportunity to meet with the actual Magistrates working that day on the cases.

There will also be display stands from other Criminal Justice Agencies.
