Safer Schools Partnerships - January 2007

Building trust and mutual respect in the community.

As part of the package of measures to tackle street crime and improve behaviour in schools, police officers are being based in selected schools in areas with high levels of street crime. This initiative is known as Safer School Partnerships, and takes a joined-up approach to crime prevention, school safety, behaviour improvement and educational achievement.

Safer Schools Partnerships, (SSPs) have been hugely successful since their launch in September 2002. The work of SSP is inspiring, representing a new approach to police involvement in schools. It links closely with the commitments made through Every Child Matters, especially in working towards Staying Safe and Making a Positive Contribution.

The focus of SSPs is early intervention and prevention. The scheme encourages police, young people and children to build good relationships, trust and mutual respect. Police in partnership with schools continue their operational approach, but do so in a way that fulfils a prevention and deterrence role. It also supports victims of crime.

Norfolk Constabulary are committed to the Safer Schools Partnership approach, and have already established partnerships in Blyth Jex and Earlham High Schools in Norwich, Rosemary Musker and Charles Burrell High School in Thetford, and Oriel High School, Great Yarmouth. In support of this initiative Norwich Criminal Justice Board will be delivering their acclaimed criminal justice workshops in SSP schools.
