Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is widespread and the consequences are devastating for victims, their children and society as a whole.
- 1 in 4 women in their lifetime experience domestic violence
- 44% of incidents are repeated
- Domestic violence accounts for a fifth of all violent crime
- It is estimated to cost the United Kingdom Economy £23billion a year.
London has made significant improvements in reducing domestic violence, with homicides down from 43 in 2003/04 to 19 in 2006/07.
Together with the Greater London Assembly and the Government office for London, the London Criminal Justice Board (CJB) has established the London Domestic Violence Coordinating Group (DVCG). This aims to improve the criminal justice response to domestic violence.
The work of the London DVCG links directly to the Mayor of London’s Second London Domestic Violence Strategy of 2005 and the Government’s 2004 National Domestic Violence Delivery Plan. These have a number of vital recommendations for agencies to achieve, which we are taking forward.

- The Home Affairs Committee Inquiry is to assess the implementation of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004 and how effective existing legislation is. It will look at their impact in terms increased reporting and convictions, and whether greater support is being given to victims.
