Streamlined Process

The Police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) are working to reduce the amount of papers that currently make up a prosecution file.
In 2006/7 a new simpler case file was piloted in four London Boroughs. This has now been developed into the Streamlined Process, which supports the Criminal Justice Simple, Speedy Summary (CJSSS) scheme. They both ensure that magistrates’ court cases are dealt with quickly and effectively.

Guidance

The Director of Public Prosecutions has produced Guidance for the Streamlined Process that explains how this process will work. The Streamlined Process simplifies the file that must be produced for the first hearing at the magistrates’ court.
A new simple form, called the Police Report, will be used in cases where the defendant is going to plead guilty. This means that police officers will be able to prepare case papers quicker as they won’t have to complete so many forms.

Timetable

The London Criminal Justice Board is currently rolling out implementation of the Streamlined Process. By the end of 2008, the whole of London will be operating this system.
