Go Straight to Jail! Or is there an alternative?
‘Local Crime - Community Sentence’ is an initiative designed to help people understand how magistrates reach sentencing decisions. It also explains the role played by probation officers in assessing risk and advising magistrates of the options at their disposal.
We are looking for community groups who would like to host an interactive presentation by a magistrate and probation officer. We gained excellent feedback for our presentation when we held a workshop for a small sample of local dignitaries in 2007 and we would now like to share it with a wider audience. Everyone has the right to know how the criminal justice system, works and what the sentencing options are.
A fictional case study of an offence is used, but you don’t simply sit and listen. The audience takes part in the presentation throughout, by questioning, asking for clarification and even disagreeing with the presenters. The event, which is free of charge, lasts one to one-and-a-half hours and although the subject is serious, time will fly and participants will find the presentation both informative and rewarding.
As one participant commented; “I now understand a lot better exactly what is involved in a Community Order.’’ ‘‘It’s not such a ‘soft option’ as I had thought.'' ''The presentation was quite fascinating and really worthwhile''. ''Makes you think…”
This presentation is a unique opportunity to ask questions directly to those involved and to voice personal opinions about our work.
Contact Anna Odrowaz-Coates at info@justicelincs.gov.uk if you would like to include a ‘Local Crime, Community Sentence’ presentation in your programme of forthcoming events. For further information please call 01522 558497.
