Unit Triples Target for POCA Confiscations
Leicestershire Constabulary economic crime unit confiscated over £4.5 million from criminals last year - more than tripling the Home Office target. End of year figures for the unit showed a total of £4,561,530 had been confiscated during 2007/08, towering above the Home Office target of £1,358,000.
Using their powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act, the unit also surpassed the target for the amount of cash seized, taking £351,623 compared to a goal of £252,982.
D/Insp Mick Beattie, head of the unit, said: "These positive results are the culmination of a lot of hard work by police and partner agencies in securing the initial prosecution which allows confiscation to take place. Removing the profit from crime by confiscating criminal assets and all the associated trappings remains a priority for Leicestershire Constabulary."
Nationally, Leicestershire Constabulary's economic crime unit is ranked third in the country. D/Insp Beattie has said matching these figures next year would be challenging but there was a lot of work being undertaken to maximise the potential for this.
