Hertfordshire Criminal Justice Board Events
Effective liason with the wider criminal justice agencies is essential to the Boards work. It ensures that all agencies and voluntary bodies are consulted and given the chance to voice their concerns or suggest ways for improvement within the Criminal Justice System. The Consultation Leaders Group plays a very important role in advising the Board and planning the Consultation Events.
The most recent Consultation Event was held on 8th February 2006 and looked at the issues surrounding 'Anti-social Behaviour'. Please find details of this event below, as well as previous and future events planned for the forthcoming year.

From Intolerance to Tolerance - Finding solutions to Anti-Social Behaviour Seminar

Richard Pleydell-Bouverie
Richard Pleydell-Bouverie as Convenor of the Consultation Leaders Group, a sub-group of the Hertfordshire Criminal Justice Board welcomed everyone to the seminar.
Richard Pleydell-Bouverie said "I am grateful to the Hertfordshire Criminal Justice Board for supporting this evening as it gives us an opportunity to talk about something which affects so many people nowadays and which is currently high on the political agenda. This is our chance to look at it from a Hertfordshire perspective.
As we all know Anti-Social Behaviour is something which affects the whole of society, young and old, rural and urban, rich and poor alike although there are clearly trends in certain directions. Our aim this evening is not to tell you what should be done but to ask you for your views and suggestions; we will then incorporate those into a series of action points for the Board during the plenary session at the end of the evening and then it is up to me to make sure that they act on them.
The serious point is that we are not here to talk about enforcement, that should be a last resort, but about how we all - individuals, society, politicians and agencies - can work to minimise this blight to 'design it out', to right some of the ills which lead to trouble and finally, to stop it escalating to the level of criminality. There will always be hard cores of troublemakers who will not be helped and others who are deeply troubled and should be dealt with in different ways but much Anti-Social Behaviour comes from boredom and lack of thought.
So please remember, this evening is about your experience of the problem and what you think can be done to minimise it. We want to learn from what you know. It is now my great pleasure to introduce our keynote speaker, Lord Laming.

Lord Laming
As guest speaker Lord Laming said: " I am pleased to be with you this evening for this very important event. I congratulate the Hertfordshire Criminal Justice Board on bringing together such an impressive group of people with such a wide range of knowledge and experience. Anti-social behaviour has an impact on the quality of life of individuals, families and communities, it causes us to question many aspects of family and community life; even to ask what kind of society we have, that results in some of it members behaving in ways which can destroy the quality of life for others."
Former chief inspector of social services Lord Laming of Tewin is one of the UK's most distinguished social workers, and a veteran of several government inquiries and policy groups. He was born in Newcastle and trained as a probation officer in Nottingham until moving to Hertfordshire county council in 1971. He was appointed director of social services in Hertfordshire in 1975, he left in 1991 to become chief inspector of social services, retiring in 1998.
Lord Laming was knighted in 1996 and made a peer in 1998.
