Community Payback
Details of how you can nominate a work area for offenders to carry out as part of their Community Payback can be found at the bottom of this page.
Dorset Probation Area works in partnership with the local community to identify suitable work placements for Community Payback activities.
Community Payback sentences are very rigorous and are also beneficial to the community. They are strictly supervised and incorporate other aspects like Skills for Life provision. As a result they provide a better opportunity for rehabilitation to the offender, and therefore help to protect the public in future.
The work is often physical and onerous, and includes gardening, decorating, cleaning and maintenance of community areas (for example, graffiti removal).
Beneficiaries of Community Payback are often charitable or voluntary organisations which provide services to the Dorset community.
All offenders on Community Payback are screened to assess the risk they may pose to the public, and are closely supervised at all times.
They will have to perform between 40 and 300 hours of unpaid work.
Suitable work placements are selected according to the following criteria:
- The work promotes community safety and public protection
- The work prevents crime and tackles the causes of crime through improved neighbourhood security
- The work makes good the harm caused by crime, repairing damage and helping victims
- The work lessens the fear of crime, for example making safer footpaths and environments.
