Become a Volunteer with Dorset Police

Dorset Police has over 100 police volunteers who assist the Force in a variety of different roles.

All sorts of people volunteer with Dorset Police, from a range of different backgrounds and with a variety of skills and life experiences.

A Dorset Police volunteer is a non-uniformed member of staff who assists at police stations or administrative centres conducting a variety of roles from monitoring CCTV cameras, through a range of clerical roles to cleaning and checking police vehicles.

The role of a volunteer is designed to enhance the work of the police and provide additional support in the area where the volunteer lives or works. This is even more crucial now with the introduction of Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT).

Dorset Police’s objective is to have a minimum of one volunteer on every SNT carrying out various roles. This will ensure that each team benefits from their local knowledge in addition to the skills and experience they also bring with them.

Volunteers within Dorset Police must be between 16 and 80 years of age and be willing to work a minimum of four hours per week.

Although volunteers are not paid a salary, the role should not leave a volunteer out of pocket. Expenses for travelling to and from a volunteer’s place of duty and meal allowances for those that work more than four hours can be claimed.
