Become a Special Constable
The Dorset Police Special Constabulary provides invaluable support to its colleagues in the regular force.
The most vital role they fulfil is the high profile, uniformed preventative patrol so often demanded by the community. However, they can be called upon to perform a wide range of duties and their role can touch on all aspects of policing.
Special constables are part-time volunteer officers who commit at least four hours per week to the Force and have the same powers as regular police officers.
All members of the Special Constabulary are volunteers who give their free time to support Dorset Police and the local community, and as such are highly valued members of the force.
To be eligible you must meet the following basic criteria:
- be a national of a country within the European Economic Area or, if a national of a country outside the EEA, have the right to reside in this country without restrictions
- be 18 years of age or over
Your training will be extensive and includes:
- powers of arrest
- common crimes
- how to prepare your evidence for court
- self defence
- how to deal with awkward situations or people
