Meet Your Magistrate

Magistrates across Cumbria are increasing their efforts to get closer to local communities, and giving the public the opportunity to have more of a say in how criminal justice in the county is delivered.

This new community engagement initiative is a two-way discussion:

  • Magistrates find out what the priorities and concerns of their local communities are;
  • Local communities find out more about what is being done to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their area.

By better involving local communities, it is hoped that this initiative will assist with:

  • Reducing crime;
  • Reducing the fear of crime;
  • Increasing public confidence that crime is being dealt with effectively;
  • Ensuring that the public can have more of an impact on reducing local crime, thereby making life safer and better for everyone.

Cumbria magistrates will attend established community meetings, such as Local Area Forums, and from time-to-time will also hold a number of dedicated local events themselves.
