FAQs
Who is Involved?
The Community Justice Initiative is sponsored by the Cleveland Criminal Justice Board and includes support from the Courts (Magistrates and Crown), Crown Prosecution Service, Police, Probation, Victim Support & Witness Service - Teesside, and the Youth Offending Service
The Community Justice Project also has the active support of Middlesbrough Council and community organisations such as North Ormesby Neighbourhood Management and the Stronger Together in East Middlesbrough (STEM) Programme (see 'Contacts' page for further information).
What Crimes Does Community Justice Deal With?
The Community Justice Court deals with all crimes committed in East Middlesbrough. The only exceptions are the most serious offences, which go to the crown court, and Domestic Abuse Cases, which go to a specialist court.
Is the Community Involved in Sentencing?
No, sentencing is a matter for the magistrates or judges who are aware of the concerns of local people through meetings and conferences. The community can suggest tasks that could be carried out by offenders who have been sentenced to unpaid work.
