Justice Awards 2008

National Justice Awards 2008

May 2008:

The 2008 Justice Awards recognises teams and individuals across the Criminal Justice System who have gone the extra mile to deliver justice. Nominations are put forward by colleagues and the winners will be selected by senior Government officials and ministers including the Attorney General, the Secretary of State for Justice and the Home Secretary.

September 2008:

This year 19 individuals and teams from Criminal Justice Agencies across Cheshire were nominated for this year's national Justice Awards.  These nominations will be judged alongside approximately 700 nominations throughout England and Wales.

October 2008:

Frontline staff and senior justice officials across Cheshire are celebrating the success of their colleagues after Sue Gibson of Risley Prison and the Western Rural Community action Team of Cheshire Police were selected for the finals of the 2008 National Justice Awards.
They are two of forty five finalists who were selected from over 700 nominations spanning the entire Criminal Justice System.
Prison Officer Sue Gibson has been nominated for her work with offenders. She has been delivering a sex offender treatment programme for over 14 years assisting sex offenders to address their offending behaviour and construct relapse prevention plans to prevent them from re-offending in the future. This has resulted in an increase in those accessing treatment and a reduction in prisoners who denied their offences so reducing their risk of creating future victims.
The Western Rural Community action Team Insp Phil Hodgson, Sgts Andy Smith and Anne Boothby together with 17 Constables have targeted youth diversion as their main priority to reduce the numbers of youths committing crime by offering diversionary activities to steer them away from crime. This has included approaching the British Army to take problematic youths away on residential courses to teach them life skills; securing funding to run drug information nights; forming a football league with local youths and a transport to leisure scheme every Friday evening to engage with young people and divert them from causing disorder; securing funding to give the pupils of 5 High Schools a free set of bicycle lights.
