Pick a site, we'll put it right!
SIX worthwhile community sites have picked by the public for a makeover by young offenders – but which should get blitzed first?
We want YOU to decide which of the shortlisted sites should get tackled first by young people referred to the Cambridgeshire Youth Offending Service.
The six projects are among eight nominated by members of the public last month through our Pick a Site, We’ll Put it Right Scheme.
To qualify, projects had to
- benefit the community
- not take paid work from anyone else
- not make someone a profit.
The work had to be challenging, worthwhile and constructive.
All sites suggested by the public have been risk assessed by the Cambridgeshire Youth Offending Service (YOS) and assessed for their suitability.
The shortlist
Those to make the final six are:

- Children’s playground, Harston
A children’s playground in Harston, requiring maintenance and repair.
Proposed: rubbing down, painting and varnishing metal and woodwork at the site and revitalising playground equipment. - Harston Community Orchard
An ancient orchard owned by Harston Parish Council and managed by Cambridge Green Belt Project and local volunteers.
Proposed: Putting chipped bark on paths and planting young apple trees grafted from 16th and 17th Century local varieties, as well as tree surgery, weeding, mowing and general maintenance. - Animal Helpline Dog Rescue, Wansford
A dog sanctuary based in Wansford, near Peterborough
Proposed: Cleaning kennel areas, putting out fresh water, weeding and general maintenance of the dog runs. - The March Sconce
An English Heritage site of special historical significance, owned by Cambridgeshire County Council. The Sconce includes a medieval burial ground and military fortification dating back to the English Civil War (1643-5).
Proposed: cleaning and weeding the site - Peterborough Millennium Green Wheel
A network of cycleways, footpaths and bridleways in and around Peterborough.
Proposed: Litter-picking, weeding and woodland maintenance work. - Pyramid Community Centre, Peterborough
A community centre based in Bretton.
Proposed: A spring clean of the interior as well as painting and decorating work.
The project that gets the most votes through Pick a Site, We’ll Put It Right will get cleaned up first but Cambridgeshire YOS anticipates that all of the six shortlisted sites will benefit from youth reparation activities over the next 12 months.
