Police nominated for national awards

Two police officers from Cambridgeshire were recently nominated for national awards.

PC Sasha Motley, right, from Thorpe Wood Police Station, in Peterborough, was put forward for the Jane's Police Review Student Officer of the Year award.

PC Steve Hinks left, from Parkside Police Station, in Cambridge, was nominated for the Community Police Officer of the Year award.

An officer for just under two years, PC Motley was commended for her personal skills and involvement in several incidents.

One was a collision in Lincoln Road, Peterborough, on June 29, 2007, in which a 13-year-old girl died. PC Motley was praised for her professionalism in dealing with people at the scene of the incident and also for using her initiative to drive the ambulance to hospital, freeing up paramedics. She was described as "displaying a professional and mature approach normally associated with an officer of much longer service."

PC Motley was also involved following a helicopter crash near Peterborough in which four people died, including a local businessman. She acted as a family liaison officer for the first 10 hours of the inquiry. The award citation states her "compassionate approach reassured the family at a very difficult time and was a credit to the service."

PC Hinks was commended for his work on CAMBAC (Cambridge Business Against Crime) and his involvement in the development of the constabulary's e-cops scheme.

His citation states: "From working with colleagues to developing a pioneering email communication scheme with local residents to forging close links with Cambridge's business community to tackling violence, disorderly behaviour and retail theft in the city centre, PC Hinks has earned a reputation for real action at the roots of the community."

The two attended an awards ceremony in London on 13 November 2008. Although they did not win the awards, we would like to honour their incredible achievements.
