Tackling drugs, changing lives

The first National Tackling Drugs Week took place from 19 to 23 May 2008 – and Cambridgeshire’s justice and drug treatment agencies put together a host of events to mark the occasion.

The Home Office decided to build on the previous success of National Tackling Drugs Day and extend it to a week in 2008. The aim of the week was to increase public confidence and awareness of the work being done locally to tackle drugs issues.

The county’s agencies are working closely together to tackle drugs and reduce drug-related crime in the community.

Similarly the local National Tackling Drugs Week campaign was driven by a number of agencies and organisations, including Cambridgeshire Drugs and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), Cambridgeshire County Council, Police and Addaction.

The campaign was fully supported by the Cambridgeshire Criminal Justice Board.

Announcing the Cambridgeshire campaign, Police Detective Chief Inspector Gary Goose, the force's drugs lead, said he supported the new Home Office drugs strategy, which aims to restrict the supply of illegal drugs, reduce their demand, protect families and strengthen communities.

"We share the ambition of seeing drug-free streets with young people and families making drug-free choices. To that end we will work with our colleagues in other agencies to combat drug supply, help those affected by drug use and assist in preventing others from entering into substance misuse."
