Police

Creating a safer Cambridgeshire...

Cambridgeshire Constabulary is responsible for policing throughout the county, covering about 1316 square miles of the East of England region.

The role of the police is to enforce the law and protect the public.

The Constabulary works together to put the resources and strategies in place to try to prevent crime and when it does happen, ensure that those responsible are caught and that their victims see justice.

Policing in Cambridgeshire

For policing purposes, the county's divided into three divisions: Northern, Central and Southern. Each is headed by a divisional commander with their own dedicated policing teams, who know the local area inside out.

Specialist officers and staff provide services such as major investigations, traffic policing and the air support unit.

There are over 20 police stations throughout the county.

The main ones are at:

  • Parkside in Cambridge
  • Thorpe Wood in Peterborough
  • Ely
  • St Ives
  • St Neots
  • Huntingdon
  • March
  • Wisbech

Contacting Cambridgeshire Constabulary

People should ring 0345 456 456 4 for all non-emergency calls.

The call will be answered by a trained operator and may be recorded for quality monitoring and training.

When to dial 999

People should only ring 999 in an emergency.

That means a crime's happening or someone's in real danger. Perhaps there are lives at risk or a real chance someone's going to get hurt.

You should also ring 999 if a serious crime is happening or if a criminal's still at or near the scene.

The police operator will need to take your name, address and details of what's happened. This can take time but it's important to get all that information so police can respond appropriately.

If you call 999 when it's not an emergency, you could delay another caller with a real emergency from getting urgent help.

Newcomers Guide to Policing and the Law in Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire Constabulary, working in partnership with the Cambridgeshire Criminal Justice Board, has produced a 20 page Newcomer’s Guide to Policing and the Law in Cambridgeshire.

Funded nationally by a grant from the Office for Criminal Justice Reform, the guide is designed to assist a growing population of workers and visitors from overseas.

The guide has been translated into 14 languages to give crime prevention and safety advice to newcomers to the county and to offer help to crime victims who can't speak English.

It also provides useful information about the law in Britain which may be different to laws in other countries. It gives information on a number of topics, including laws governing driving, alcohol and drugs and carrying weapons.

The guide's available in English, French, Polish, Portuguese, Czech, Slovak, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish (Sorani), Cantonese, Mandarin and Urdu.
