The Launch

Creating community cohesion... Understanding stop and search figures... Tackling drug use amongst young people...

Those were just some of the issues under the spotlight at a public forum to launch Inside Justice Week in Cambridgeshire.

Chief Officers from across the county's criminal justice agencies took part in a lively debate at Cambridge Regional College on December 5.

The forum was chaired by Cambridgeshire Chief Constable and Cambridgeshire Criminal Justice Board chair Julie Spence. It also included Chief Officers from local Youth Offending teams, Probation, Prisons, Crown Prosecution Service, the Courts and Victim Support & Witness Service.

Chief Officers from Cambridgeshire's Criminal Justice System are quizzed on a range of topics.

The audience got to vote on a number of issues relating to criminal justice.

The panel responded to the far-reaching debate by highlighting some of the ways the different agencies are working together to respond to community issues.

Those included new programmes that tackle use of Class A drugs and alcohol amongst teens to give a bigger range of support at an earlier stage.

And how, to help newcomers integrate in the area, the agencies have got together to produce information in 15 languages, explaining how they work with the public in Cambridgeshire.

Inside Justice Week aims to give people information about the support that's available if they come into contact with the Criminal Justice System, either as a victim or a witness.

It's designed to boost confidence - because research shows that people who have confidence in the system are more likely to take a full and active role in reporting crime, volunteering in the Criminal Justice System, coming forward as a witness or being a juror.

The launch was co-hosted with Cambridge Regional College, which hosted a week-long series of events to encourage young people to understand the Criminal Justice System.
